What is BMI (Body Mass Index)?

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a numerical value calculated from your weight and height. Developed by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s, BMI provides a simple way to categorize people as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.

BMI is widely used by doctors, fitness professionals, insurance companies, and government health agencies because it is quick to calculate and reasonably correlated with body fat percentage at a population level. However, it has limitations for individuals β€” which we will cover.

The BMI Formula

BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters:

  • BMI = (weight in lbs / height in inchesΒ²) Γ— 703
  • Example: 70 kg, 1.75 m β†’ BMI = 70 / (1.75 Γ— 1.75) = 22.86
  • Same person in imperial: 154 lbs, 5'9" (69 in) β†’ BMI = (154 / 69Β²) Γ— 703 = 22.74 (rounding differences)
BMI = weight(kg) / height(m)Β²

For imperial units (pounds and inches):

BMI Categories: What Your Number Means

WHO and CDC use these standard BMI categories for adults:

  • Below 16.0 β€” Severe underweight
  • 16.0 – 18.4 β€” Underweight
  • 18.5 – 24.9 β€” Normal (healthy) weight
  • 25.0 – 29.9 β€” Overweight
  • 30.0 – 34.9 β€” Obese (Class I)
  • 35.0 – 39.9 β€” Obese (Class II)
  • 40.0+ β€” Severe obesity (Class III)

Asian populations often use slightly different cutoffs (e.g., overweight starts at 23 instead of 25) due to higher body fat percentages at the same BMI. Always discuss your BMI with a healthcare provider in your context.

  • View the BMI chart to see all categories at a glance
  • Check your healthy weight range β€” the ideal weight band for your specific height

BMI Limitations: What It Does Not Measure

BMI is a useful screening tool, but it has well-known limitations:

Muscle vs fat

BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes and bodybuilders often have BMIs in the 'overweight' or 'obese' range despite very low body fat percentages.

Body fat distribution

Two people with identical BMIs can have very different health risks based on where they carry weight. Visceral fat (around organs) is more dangerous than subcutaneous fat.

Age and gender

Older adults naturally have less muscle and more fat at the same BMI. Women typically have higher healthy body fat percentages than men. BMI does not adjust for either.

Children

BMI for children uses age- and gender-specific percentiles, not the adult cutoffs. A child's BMI is interpreted differently than an adult's.

Ethnicity

BMI was originally developed using European populations. South Asian, African, and other populations often have different healthy ranges.

BMI vs Body Fat Percentage

Body fat percentage is a more direct measure of body composition but harder to measure accurately. Methods include:

  • DEXA scans β€” Most accurate but expensive (β‚Ή2,000-5,000)
  • Skinfold calipers β€” Cheap but operator-dependent
  • Bioelectrical impedance scales β€” Convenient but accuracy varies with hydration
  • Hydrostatic weighing β€” Lab-only, very accurate
  • Air displacement (Bod Pod) β€” Fast and accurate, available in some clinics

For most people, BMI is a fine starting point. If you are an athlete or have specific health concerns, consult a doctor or sports medicine specialist for more comprehensive measurements.

Tips for a Healthy BMI

  • Focus on sustainable habits, not crash diets β€” slow weight changes are far easier to maintain
  • Combine cardio (running, cycling, swimming) with strength training for optimal body composition
  • Eat whole foods β€” vegetables, lean protein, complex carbs, healthy fats
  • Stay hydrated β€” often confused with hunger, dehydration drives unnecessary calorie intake
  • Sleep 7-9 hours β€” poor sleep correlates strongly with weight gain
  • Track measurements beyond weight β€” waist circumference is a better health predictor than BMI alone

Final Thoughts

BMI is a quick health screening tool, not a definitive judgment of fitness or health. Use it as a starting point: if your BMI is outside the healthy range, that is a signal to investigate further with a doctor β€” not necessarily a problem on its own. Our free BMI calculator runs in your browser, supports both metric and imperial units, and provides a clear visual gauge plus your specific healthy weight range. For most people, it gives you 80% of the insight in 10 seconds. The other 20% requires a real conversation with a healthcare provider who knows your individual context.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy BMI range?

For adults, the WHO defines 18.5 to 24.9 as the healthy weight range. Below 18.5 is underweight; 25 and above is overweight. Asian populations may use 23 as the overweight threshold due to body composition differences.

Is BMI accurate for athletes and bodybuilders?

No. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so muscular individuals often have BMIs in the overweight or obese ranges despite low body fat. For athletes, body fat percentage and waist circumference are better indicators.

How do I calculate BMI without a calculator?

BMI = weight(kg) / height(m)Β². For example: 70 kg Γ· (1.75 m Γ— 1.75 m) = 70 / 3.0625 = 22.86. The math is straightforward but our calculator handles it instantly with no errors.

Should I worry if my BMI is slightly above 25?

A BMI of 25-27 with no other health issues, normal blood pressure, and good fitness levels is rarely concerning by itself. BMI is one signal among many β€” body composition, lifestyle, and family history matter more than the single number.

Does BMI work the same way for children?

No. Children's BMI is interpreted using age- and gender-specific percentiles, not adult cutoffs. A pediatrician can interpret a child's BMI properly. Adult cutoffs do not apply until late adolescence.

Is my weight data sent to your servers?

No. The BMI calculator runs entirely in your browser. Your weight and height are processed locally and never uploaded, logged, or stored on any server.
