What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a unified, destination-based tax introduced in India on July 1, 2017. It replaced a complex web of indirect taxes โ VAT, service tax, excise duty, and many others โ with a single tax structure applicable across the country.
GST is charged at every stage of the supply chain (manufacturer โ distributor โ retailer โ consumer), with input tax credit available at each step. The end consumer effectively pays the tax, while businesses act as collectors.
GST Slab Rates in India (2026)
GST rates in India fall into five primary slabs based on the type of good or service:
- 0% โ Essential items: fresh milk, fruits, vegetables, books, newspapers
- 5% โ Common-use items: packaged food, footwear under โน1,000, household necessities
- 12% โ Standard goods: processed food, mobile phones, fruit juices, business class air travel
- 18% โ Most goods and services: electronics, restaurants, IT services, financial services
- 28% โ Luxury and demerit goods: cars, tobacco, aerated drinks, premium products
Some items have special rates: gold (3%), rough diamonds (0.25%), and a few others outside the standard slabs.
CGST vs SGST vs IGST Explained
GST is split into multiple components depending on whether the transaction is within a state (intra-state) or across states (inter-state):
Quick rule: Same state = CGST + SGST (split 50/50). Different states = IGST (full rate). The total GST burden is identical either way.
CGST (Central GST)
Collected by the central government on intra-state supplies. Half of the total GST rate. For an 18% transaction, CGST = 9%.
SGST (State GST)
Collected by the state government on intra-state supplies. The other half of the total GST rate. For an 18% transaction, SGST = 9%.
IGST (Integrated GST)
Collected on inter-state supplies (when goods/services move between states). The full GST rate as a single tax. The central government collects it and distributes the state portion to the destination state.
GST Inclusive vs GST Exclusive: Important Distinction
GST Exclusive (Tax Added)
The displayed price does NOT include GST. You add GST on top of the base amount. Common for B2B invoices and wholesale transactions. Example: โน10,000 + 18% GST = โน11,800 final.
GST Inclusive (Tax Included)
The displayed price already INCLUDES GST. You extract the GST from the total to find the base amount. Common for B2C retail (MRP includes all taxes). Example: โน11,800 inclusive of 18% GST means base = โน10,000, GST = โน1,800.

GST Calculation Formulas
GST Exclusive (Adding GST)
GST Amount = Base ร (GST Rate / 100). Total = Base + GST. Example: โน10,000 base ร 18/100 = โน1,800 GST. Total = โน11,800.
GST Inclusive (Extracting GST)
Base = Total / (1 + GST Rate/100). GST = Total - Base. Example: โน11,800 / 1.18 = โน10,000 base. GST = โน1,800.
Common GST Calculation Scenarios
- Restaurant bill (5% GST) โ Pre-tax bill โน2,000 + 5% GST = โน2,100 final
- Mobile phone purchase (18% GST) โ โน50,000 phone + 18% = โน59,000 total
- Electronics MRP (18% inclusive) โ โน10,000 MRP includes โน1,525 GST; product cost = โน8,475
- Inter-state shipping (18% IGST) โ Same total tax as intra-state, but flows differently to government accounts
- Luxury car (28% GST) โ โน15 lakh car ex-showroom + 28% = โน19.2 lakh on-road (before other charges)
- B2B invoice (18% GST exclusive) โ Service charge โน50,000 + โน9,000 GST = โน59,000 invoice

What are the current GST rates in India?
The five standard slabs are 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Most goods and services fall under 18%. Essential items are 0% or 5%, while luxury and demerit goods are 28%. Some special rates exist for gold (3%) and diamonds (0.25%).
What is the difference between CGST + SGST and IGST?
CGST + SGST applies to intra-state supplies (within the same state) and splits the tax between central and state governments equally. IGST applies to inter-state supplies (between different states) and is collected entirely by the central government, then redistributed to the destination state.
How do I calculate GST on an inclusive price?
Divide the inclusive amount by (1 + GST rate as decimal). For 18% GST: Base = Inclusive / 1.18. The GST amount is the inclusive total minus the base. Our calculator does this automatically โ just select 'Remove GST' mode.
Is GST charged on shipping/freight?
Yes. Freight and shipping charges are typically taxed at the same GST rate as the underlying goods being shipped. If shipping is billed separately, it usually attracts 5% GST as a standalone service.
Can I claim input tax credit on GST paid?
Registered businesses can claim input tax credit (ITC) on GST paid for business expenses, against the GST collected from customers. This is a major benefit of GST registration. Personal/individual purchases do not qualify for ITC.
Does the calculator work for the latest GST rate changes?
Yes. The calculator uses standard rate slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) which are configurable. For one-off rate changes on specific items, simply enter the appropriate rate manually.
