Start with the audience, not the design. A poster for a kids' event uses different fonts, colors, and density than a poster for a finance conference. Decide the audience first; design follows.
Limit yourself to two fonts and three colors. Most amateur designs look messy because they use four fonts and seven colors. A tight palette feels polished even with simple layouts.
